PLANTING SEEDS

The holiday season is full of giving – it is a festive time that brings out one’s charitable self. This is the time to plant seeds so you can harvest them in January!

1. Executives and managers tend to travel less. They may have more time to talk with you.
2. The holiday spirit prevails – more courtesy and charity. People tend to be more receptive to inquiries during this time. It’s easier to get past the “gatekeepers.”
3. Corporate budgets are generally being tweaked in November and December. There might be some wiggle room for a new position or a raise.

Here are 4 tips for planting career seeds during the holidays:

1. Stay sober at company parties. Don’t be a bore, but DO make pitches about yourself.
2. Ask your friends to invite you to their company parties.
3. Attend your friends and neighbors’ holiday parties with the intent to make a connection.
4. Listen to conversations. Most tend to center around people’s work, so take advantage of the situation. Discretely exchange business cards and then don’t forget to follow up!
